Do I need special documents to travel with minor children in Brazil?
The following was copied from the Consulate General of Brazil in Miami on Feb. 17, 2009:

"Applicants under 18 years of age must present the birth certificate and a notarized letter of consent signed by both parents or legal guardian(s) authorizing the Consulate General of Brazil to issue a visa for the minor applicant.

Please note: although Brazilian authorities do not legally require written authorization for US citizens under 18 years of age to travel without both or one of the parents, we do recommend that minors in this situation entering Brazil or traveling within the country to carry such a document."

You may read more information at the CG site.

Do I need immunizations to travel to Brazil?
At this time, no immunizations are "required" to travel to Brazil. Contact your local Health Department for recommendations.

We advise everyone to have an updated tetanus shot. If you are going to work with a medical/dental team, we also recommend a Hep B series. Immunizations are the responsibility of each person and an individual expense.

Mato Grosso do Sul is not in a malaria zone; and therefore, malaria medicine is not usually recommended.

Do I need a passport for traveling to Brazil and how do I get one?
Yes, you need a current passport that will not expire within six months of your return to the U.S. Your local post office can provide you with the proper forms and sometimes with the necessary photos. Check under Forms. Note that new passports can take up to 8 weeks. Allow yourself as much time as possible or pay for express delivery.

Will I need a visa to travel to Brazil?
YES, everyone traveling into Brazil will need a visa. The Consulate General of Brazil in Miami has a online visa application form that can be downloaded and printed  You can also download this application from our "Forms" page on this website. Your particular Brazilian Consulate depends on the state in which you live. Find your Brazilian Consular Jurisdiction. After international airline tickets are purchased the travel agent can issue a letter stating that you have purchased a round-trip ticket to visit Brazil with the dates. If time permits, you can wait until you receive your tickets at which time you can make a copy of the ticket front. Fill out the visa application form completely as instructed and do "exactly" as it instructs you to do. If not, you may lose time by having the application form returned to you and having to resend it. For information on how to apply, see our Visa Info page on this website. For those without computer online access, we will make a visa application form available to you either through your group leader or we can mail/fax one to you. See forms on the website or contact us.

What are the luggage allowances on airlines?
At this time the internationally accepted policy is that NO ONE BAG may weigh more than 50 pounds. While you may take two bags, allowed weight may not be averaged between the two bags. Generally accepted practice on a mission trip is that one bag is devoted to the project and one bag is personal clothing. If you are not aware of current US policies for carry-on luggage, check out the TSA website.
